City of St. George Receives State Awards in Parks and Recreation
St George, UT. — The City of St. George has been honored for its commitment to quality programming, design and service to the community for leisure and recreational opportunities. The Utah Recreation and Parks Association (URPA) held its annual conference in St. George at the Dixie Center in March, 2008 and awarded the City and the St. George Leisure Services Department two awards of excellence for their commitment in the Parks and Recreation field.
The Outstanding Facility award was given to the City for the St. George Water Walk on Historic Main Street and the Town Square. The Water Walk begins at Brooks Nature Park and flows down to the Town Square. The purpose of the St. George Water Walk and Town Square was to enhance downtown and create a gathering place in the heart of the City to reflect community’s rich heritage. The Water Walk and Town Square were dedicated on October 15, 2007 under the direction of Mayor McArthur and the St. George City Council.
The Outstanding Program of the Year award was presented to the City Leisure Services Department for the Tonaquint Nature Center and its youth summer camp program. This program has continued to grow in popularity with local residents since it began 2001 by adding more sessions to meet the demand of a rapidly growing community. The program’s primary goal is to educate local youth to the wonders of nature through environmental education activities.
