The City of St. George has recognized the need for a revitalization of the “Information Technology” area, both for support and direction. Due to unprecedented (yet welcome) growth of the city and services, this need has reached a very high level. Like many fast growing communities, the city has experienced some diversity and individual direction from different departments. The Technical Services department itself went through changes in personnel and structure.
In an effort to bring some uniform and consistent direction, utilize financial resources better, and develop future comprehensive goals, a slight reorganization took place at the first of the year. The Technical Services division has been formally organized into two departments. The Technical Services department will handle the Computer and Network support for the “information systems” and Web development and programming. The GIS department will provide support for the growing need of integrated “geographical information” that is a major part of the city department’s information requirements.
A new Technology Services Division Manager was hired and the City Manager (and support staff) gave a directive to have all Technical Services functions supported properly by and through the City Technical Services department.
This move shows a tremendous understanding (by city management) of the importance “coordinated information” plays in making the city run efficiently and fiscally responsibly. It also shows their willingness to make necessary changes to move the city forward and keep up with technology. This will be a great change and a giant step forward for everyone involved and the Technical Services department is committed to providing the support that is needed.
